Veneers

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin, tooth-colored shells of porcelain or composite resin that Dr. Dorfner bonds to the front of your natural teeth. They improve the appearance of your smile by changing the size, shape, and color of your teeth.

What types of issues can veneers correct?

Dental veneers have been used in cosmetic dentistry for decades and can correct a range of imperfections. We use them to fix issues such as:

  • Worn down teeth
  • Chipped, fractured, or damaged teeth
  • Stained or discolored teeth
  • Misaligned or uneven teeth
  • Pointy or unusually shaped teeth
  • Gaps between teeth

If you chip a tooth, you might only need a single veneer. However, Dr. Dorfner usually recommends placing four to eight veneers to create a more symmetrical and attractive smile. Each case is different – Dr. Dorfner discusses all potential options with you and creates an individualized treatment plan that meets your specific needs and aesthetic goals.

The process for getting dental veneers

Typically, veneers require three visits to our dental office in Burlington Township.

First Visit - Consultation

During your first appointment, Dr. Dorfner performs a thorough oral exam, asks about your specific objectives for your smile and oral health, and takes a series of X-rays. If you have healthy teeth and gums and she determines that you’re a good candidate for veneers, you’ll come back for another appointment to prepare your teeth.

Second Visit - Preparation

At your second appointment, Dr. Dorfner administers a local anesthetic and prepares your teeth for the veneers. She removes a thin layer of enamel from each tooth and takes a series of impressions. We send your impressions to a dental laboratory that fabricates your custom-made veneers. If you suffer from dental anxiety, we offer sedation dentistry, which can keep you calm and comfortable during the procedure.

Third visit - Placement of Veneers

When we receive your veneers from the lab, you’ll return to our office for your third appointment. Dr. Dorfner lines up the veneers with your teeth bonds them in place and polishes them. She also provides instructions on how to properly care for your veneers.

Caring For Veneers

Veneers typically last an average of 12-15 years, but it’s possible to extend their lifespan if you take good care of them. Dr. Dorfner recommends that you:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day
  • Floss before going to bed at night
  • Use a mouthwash that contains fluoride to help strengthen enamel and rinse away food particles and bacteria
  • Limit consumption of sugary foods and drinks to ward off decay
  • Refrain from biting your fingernails and chewing on ice, hard candies, popcorn kernels, and other hard foods. Using your teeth as tools can also chip your veneers.
  • Visit your dentist every six months for a dental checkup and cleaning.

If you grind or clench your teeth or participate in sports, consider wearing a custom-made mouth guard to protect your veneers and teeth.

Do Veneers Look Like Natural Teeth?

Cosmetic dentistry is an art, and your veneers are specially designed and placed to complement your features and blend in with your other teeth. Ultra-thin porcelain veneers mimic the translucency of natural teeth and are highly resistant to staining caused by coffee, tea, wine, and other foods and drinks. Dr. Dorfner also customizes the thickness and shape of your veneers to create a beautiful, natural-looking smile you’ll love.
