Invisalign Q&A

What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign is a type of orthodontic treatment used to straighten your teeth or jaw. Instead of using metal wires, brackets, and rubber bands like traditional braces, Invisalign uses a series of clear aligners made of SmartTrack®.

SmartTrack is a nearly invisible FDA-approved thermoplastic. It contains no gluten, latex, or BPS, making treatment safe for people with allergies, as well as pregnant women.

What types of alignment issues does Invisalign treat?

At Dorfner Dental Studio, Dr. Dorfner uses Invisalign to correct mild alignment issues, including:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Crowding
  • Overlapping teeth
  • Crooked teeth

Dr. Dorfner also uses Invisalign to close visible gaps between teeth.

What does orthodontic treatment with Invisalign involve?

At Dorfner Dental Studio, Invisalign treatment begins with a comprehensive oral exam and a series of oral X-rays. Dr. Dorfner uses the X-rays to assess the alignment of your teeth and jaw and to determine if you qualify for treatment.

If Dr. Dorfner determines you’re a candidate, she takes impressions of your teeth and uploads them to a computer design program. Dr. Dorfner uses the program to develop a custom orthodontic treatment plan, going so far as to map out the exact movements of your teeth and jaw.

After finalizing a plan and explaining it to you, Dr. Dorfner sends your designs to a dental laboratory. The laboratory uses the designs to manufacture your first pair of Invisalign aligners.

Throughout orthodontic treatment with Invisalign, you return to Dorfner Dental Studio every two to three months, depending on treatment length. During each visit, you transition into a new pair of aligners that place mild pressure on your teeth and jaw, gradually improving their position.

How long does orthodontic treatment with Invisalign take?

Orthodontic treatment with Invisalign typically takes between 12 and 18 months*, but it may take longer depending on your individual needs. To ensure the process goes as smoothly as possible, wear your aligners for between 20-22 hours each day and attend each of your scheduled appointments.

When you finish wearing the aligners, Dr. Dorfner provides you with a retainer. A retainer is an orthodontic appliance that prevents your newly aligned teeth from shifting out of place.

Do my Invisalign aligners need to be cleaned?

Yes. It’s important to regularly clean your Invisalign aligners to reduce the buildup of plaque, food particles, and saliva. Dr. Dorfner recommends rinsing your aligners in cool tap water at least twice daily and gently brushing them with a soft-bristle toothbrush at night.
