Crowns and Bridges Q & A

What are dental crowns and bridges?

Crowns and bridges are dental restorations. Even though they’re frequently mentioned together, they’re actually two different things:

Dental crowns

Dental crowns are synthetic coverings that envelop a damaged or decaying tooth. Once placed, a crown restores your tooth’s shape, size, and appearance, making it easier to bite and chew.

At Dorfner Dental Studio, Dr. Dorfner offers crowns made of porcelain and ceramic. These materials are tough, long-lasting, and mimic the color and light-reflecting properties of your natural enamel.

Dental bridges

A bridge fills a gap in your smile caused by a missing permanent tooth. By receiving a dental bridge, you can reduce the risk of gum recession, tooth loss, and bone decay.

What is the process for getting dental crowns and bridges?

At Dorfner Dental Studio, getting a dental crown or bridge takes two appointments about a week apart.

First visit

During your first visit, Dr. Dorfner examines your mouth and takes a series of oral X-rays.

If you’re getting a crown, Dr. Dorfner administers a local anesthetic and prepares your tooth. To do that, she carefully removes some enamel on the top and sides of your tooth and takes impressions.

If you’re getting a bridge, Dr. Dorfner removes a thin layer of enamel from the two healthy teeth (or previously treated teeth) on either side of the gap in your smile and takes impressions of your mouth.

Afterward, she sends your impressions to a dental laboratory that designs and crafts your custom restoration.

Second visit

About a week later, you return to Dorfner Dental Studio. Dr. Dorfner administers a local anesthetic and attaches your crown or bridge with dental bonding. She trims any excess material, polishes your teeth, and provides care instructions.

Does getting crowns and bridges hurt?

Getting a dental crown or bridge is a quick and pain-free procedure. After you receive the restoration, you may experience increased tooth sensitivity, but that should subside within a week. To minimize any discomfort, Dr. Dorfner recommends taking over-the-counter pain medication or applying a bag of ice to your cheek.

How long do crowns and bridges last?

Dental crowns and bridges last 12-15 years on average, but it’s possible to extend their lifespan. Dr. Dorfner recommends:

  • Brushing your teeth twice daily
  • Flossing your teeth before going to bed at night
  • Avoiding bad habits like nail-biting or opening packaging with your teeth
  • Wearing a mouthguard during physical activity

It’s also important to visit Dorfner Dental Studio once every six months for an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning.
